FW00 ‘X-RAY’ THINSULATE CARGO BOMBER
In Naoki Takizawa’s third ever showing for Issey Miyake, Takizawa opted for a more utilitarian look than his two previous runways, and placed a big emphasis on functionality. The runway was said to be heavily inspired by the theme of travelling, and was Issey Miyake’s answer to other travel wear brands like Samsonite and Mandarina Duck.
Throughout the first half of the show, outfits were composed of dark colours & heavy-duty materials, with the stark contrast of bright neon hues & playful silhouettes in the latter half of the show. Models wearing the x-ray jacket were sincere in look, but playful in character, and were given objects like a Gameboy, a banana, and a map to play with.
The jacket was dubbed by wearers as the ‘x-ray’, as it was accompanied by an innovative Ad campaign, shot by Koichiro Doi, in which the jackets were photographed being passed through an x-ray machine. The campaign perfectly ties into the themes of travel, by displaying items commonly taken on long-haul flights, such as a razor, a Walkman, and a toothbrush. The outer shell is constructed from a rigid nylon material, and has a Thinsulate inner lining to keep its wearer warm. The jacket features a stowaway hood, multiple ventilation holes, and two removeable inner ‘lung’ pockets that appear to take clear inspiration from the human anatomy.
The x-ray was a unique development in high fashion at the time, as Issey Miyake would be the first brand to try and fuse the minimalist business aesthetic with the functional utility of travel wear brands that were popular at the time.
