The Now-Elusive "Burton Idiom" Line
The Burton "Idiom" line was a collaboration between snowboard-giants Burton, and renowned Japanese designer Hiroshi Fujiwara. The line was a high-concept diffusion line, that brought a fresh perspective on technical ski wear by blending elements of functionality with bold and experimental design.
When Hiroshi Fujiwara, the creative genius behind Fragment Design, was approached by Burton's Greg Dacyshyn, he saw an opportunity to reimagine snowboarding apparel by introducing elements of his 'avant garde' fashion sensibilities. The result was a collection of minimal yet highly functional garments that integrated daring prints, patterns, and color schemes—elements usually absent from performance outerwear. Fujiwara’s expertise in crafting prints and patterns, combined with Burton’s technical know-how, set the foundation for iDiom’s distinct identity.
The Idiom "Slant" jacket, was released as part of the FW07 collection, and exemplified Idiom's commitment to technical innovation and modern aesthetics. The jacket quickly became a cult favourite for its unique tartan print, as well as its off-centre zip, two features that were rarely seen together on technical outerwear. The jacket also featured laser-cut, taped seams and a fully waterproof membrane, and delivered peak functionality for snowboarding and extreme weather conditions, with elements like pit zips, multiple adjustable points, and handwarmer pockets.
Fujiwara described iDiom as a conceptual exploration rather than a branding exercise. “iDiom is iDiom,” he once stated, emphasizing that the line existed as a creative project, untethered from the need to promote his own name or lines.
Though the iDiom line is no longer in production, its influence is unmistakable. By integrating high-performance materials with bold, experimental design, the collaboration between Burton and Fujiwara proved that technical apparel could transcend function and become a canvas for artistic expression.
Fast forward to the 2020s, and the line has seen a resurgence in popularity, with any Instagram post containing the jacket instantly blowing up, and celebrities like Lil Yachty being seen sporting the jackets.
